A resort fee is an extra charge that hotels add to a bill at check-in. The hotel chain's reasoning and justification behind the extra charges? Added services. The majority of the time these 'services' include free local calls and a bottle of water in a hotel room, which to be honest, are services included in Red Roof Inns around America.
Resort fees are not payed at the time of booking. For example let's say a room is booked on Expedia or Priceline. The resort fee is merely mentioned towards the end of the booking screen but is not added to the bill. If the hotel is $40 a night, then all the booking vacationer will pay at that time is $40 (plus taxes). When they show up to the hotel they will find another $7 added for each night of their stay. While this may seem insignificant at first glance, an added $7 a night fee over the course of a week can add up....
